Read previewThe housing market may be starting to turn a corner, offering frustrated buyers a chance to jump back into the market after a long stretch of dismal prospects. "We think the housing market is going to improve over the next half of a year," Glenn Kelman, the CEO of Redfin, in a recent interview. Inventory is risingMore inventory is finally trickling into the housing market, which could help push prices down. Elevated mortgage rates are a key problem in today's housing market, as they deter both buyers and sellers from making deals. Rates dropping to 5%-6% would make the housing market "explode," but even a 6.5% 30-year mortgage rate would be enough to make the housing market "very strong," Reffkin said.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Times was honored Monday with George Polk Awards for Foreign Reporting and Photojournalism for its coverage of the war between Israel and Hamas. Price drops may be needed to thaw the housing market, which could take years, Zandi said. Kelman expects home prices to drop next year, as listings are up and sellers are cutting prices. AdvertisementHouse prices may be headed lower, dealing a blow to sellers but providing relief to buyers, two experts say. The housing market ground to a halt this year, as the Federal Reserve's inflation-fighting hikes to interest rates have boosted mortgage rates to two-decade highs. "I don't expect the housing market to come roaring back here, certainly not in 2024," he said.

A recent jury verdict against the National Association of Realtors and large residential brokerages could upend the residential real estate industry. Here's what real estate agents, homebuyers and sellers need to know about potential changes in residential real estate economics. A bad time for bad news in real estateThe jury verdict comes at a time when many real estate agents are already feeling a pinch. At a time when home sales are already under pressure, "this lawsuit is just another punch in the gut for real estate franchises," said Bill Gross, a self-employed real estate broker associate in California with eXp Realty. Lawsuits focused on fees reinforce the general trend of trying to lower fees in the real estate market, Schipani said.

Data on the characteristics of newly constructed homes for 2022, released in June by the Census Bureau, revealed homes continued to get bigger after shrinking from 2015 to 2020. A higher share of four-bedroom houses were built, most constructed with air conditioning, and more houses are doing away with fireplaces. In 2022, nearly half of all homes constructed had four bedrooms, compared to two-bedroom homes at 9%. Houses have remained relatively the same height, with a slightly higher percentage of one-story homes and slightly fewer percentage of two-story homes compared to 10 years ago. The median are now comes in at around 2,300 square feet for houses built in 2022.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

The verdict could upend decades-old practices that have allowed real estate agents to boost commissions by forcing sellers to pay commissions to buyers' real estate brokers. Representatives of Compass and Douglas Elliman declined to comment. BTIG analyst Soham Bhonsle in an investor note said the fact that Douglas Elliman, Redfin, Compass and eXp were being sued by the same lawyers was a negative for their stocks. Zillow (ZG.O) shares initially fell 0.33% after brokerage Jefferies cut its price target, citing the impact of Tuesday's verdict. While Zillow is not a defendant in either lawsuit, Jefferies said Tuesday's verdict "increases the chances of a ban on commission sharing and Zillow having to pivot the business model."

There is no end in sight for high mortgage rates, and sellers are dropping prices. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe housing market is in an ugly place right now for buyers and while things may be stabilizing, that just means pressure will likely shift from buyers to sellers. Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman made headlines in recent weeks with several interviews where he said the housing market had hit "rock bottom." "The housing market is just taking a beating because affordability is at a four-decade low. While the market might not get worse for buyers, sellers are not yet at rock bottom after enjoying years of rising home values.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky called out his own company in an interview with Bloomberg published Monday. AdvertisementAdvertisementAirbnb CEO Brian Chesky says it's time for the company to "get our house in order," in an interview with Bloomberg, and short-term rental hosts are thrilled. Airbnb host Ric Kenworthy, who manages over 90 properties in Arizona, says Chesky's comments were a long time coming. Chesky's site is a marketplace that connects hosts and travelers, and the CEO is struggling to keep both sides happy. As travelers continue to book short-term rentals, Chesky acknowledged the company "never fully built the foundation" needed for the current size of the company.

The US housing market is starting to flash a few rays of sunshine for prospective homebuyers. It comes as the housing market has been stuck, with sales activity stalling as high rates discourage buying and selling. In fact, the situation is so bad that Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman recently declared the market has hit "rock bottom." More precisely, the 30-year mortgage rate hit the highest level in 23 years, climbing further above 7%. In the existing home market, sellers are growing open to negotiating about the asking price, or offering concessions, like funding home repairs or a mortgage-rate buydown.

Pending home sales slipped 7.1% in August in another sign of the housing market's slump. Multi-decades high mortgage rates are keeping homebuyers out of the market. AdvertisementAdvertisementPending home sales slipped 7.1% in August compared to July, according to the National Association of Realtors. "Mortgage rates have been rising above 7% since August, which has diminished the pool of home buyers," said Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, in the release. Home sales dipped from August across all regions of the country, falling the most in the South, where pending sales recorded a drop of 9%.

This post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. In today's big story, we're looking at how a Google loophole brings advertisements for illegal drugs hosted on defaced government websites to the top of search results. Previously, that wasn't an issue since these web pages never appeared in Google searches because website owners restricted Google from indexing them. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe result is people using internal search functions to create webpages advertising drugs on websites viewed as trustworthy by Google. Salesforce held an alumni event last week with 50 former executives who were gifted with stuffed animals. The company is encouraging former executives to "boomerang" amid a hiring drive. Salesforce recently announced plans to hire 3,000 people despite brutal layoffs earlier this year. Kelman, who left the company in 2011 for leadership stints at the likes of Amazon Web Services and Oracle, said it was "good timing," and rejoined as president and chief marketing officer. Salesforce said it is hiring 3,300 employees across sales, engineering, and its data cloud product teams to help grow its artificial intelligence business last week, per Bloomberg.

Marc Benioff, chief executive officer of Salesforce.com Inc., right, greets attendees after a keynote at the company's Dreamforce conference in San Francisco on Sept. 12, 2023. Ariel Kelman had been away from Salesforce for over a decade, when he received a direct message on Twitter from CEO Marc Benioff earlier this year. "I just thought it was good timing," Kelman said in an interview at Salesforce's Dreamforce conference in San Francisco last week. Kelman spent the few months prior running marketing at a startup called Fireblocks before rejoining Salesforce in June as chief marketing officer. Kelman and Milano are among at least eight ex-Salesforce execs who have rejoined the gang in 2023, as the company approaches its 25th birthday.

The feature, Women+ Connect, will allow women and nonbinary riders and drivers to make being connecting with each other for trips a priority by toggling on a setting in the app. The goal, Lyft said, is for women to feel safer using its platform, and to increase the number of female Lyft drivers. About half of Lyft’s passengers but just 23 percent of its drivers are women, the company said. “Women drivers tell us it’s hard to drive at night,” said Jody Kelman, Lyft’s executive vice president of customers. “We need to remove a barrier for women drivers today.”

CEO Marc Benioff says he's got no plans for another big round of cuts and hopes layoffs are done. So on this week's call, Benioff took time to thank and wax poetic on all the former Salesforce employees who returned to work at the company during its turnaround effort. Former chief business officer Ebony Beckwith, a longtime executive who led the company's philanthropic foundation, quietly exited Salesforce in June. "We're ramping up hiring for critical roles," a spokesperson for Salesforce wrote to Insider via email when asked for clarification on Benioff's comments. At the same time, if former and current Salesforce employees are feeling whiplashed — told to leave and then told to come back — it's because the message coming from the top is mixed.

CEO Marc Benioff thanked "boomerangs," employees who left and came back, for the fast-tracked growth. Salesforce overachieved its profit margin goals in the second quarter, earlier than planned for — and CEO Marc Benioff says "boomerang" employees played a big part in the results. Three high-profile Salesforce boomerangs have re-joined the company in recent months: president and chief revenue officer Miguel Milano, chief marketing officer Ariel Kelman, and chief business officer and chief of staff to Marc Benioff, Kendall Collins. Collins worked for Salesforce from 2004 to 2012, leaving as executive vice president of Salesforce Cloud.
